PROF. CARMENCITA G. ARAMBULO

Prof. Carmencita G. Arambulo is one of the leading musicians of the Philippines today. An accomplished pianist, she is also a well-known piano pedagogue, and educator .

Having graduated magna cum laude in 1958 with a Bachelor of Music degree from Saint Paul College of Manila, she completed her Master of music degree in piano and theory in 1961 with highest honors and was named Outstanding Graduate of the Year at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society in the USA. Her piano teachers include Sister Marie Vincent Llamzon ( a graduate of Alfred Cortot at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris), Miklos Schwalb, Hungarian concert pianist (from Liszt Piano Academy in Budapest) and Nena del Rosario Villanueva, Filipino concert pianist (who trained under Isabelle Vengerova in Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, USA).

In 1979, Prof. Arambulo was awarded a grant by the Soviet ministry of Culture to observe specialized music schools in the USSR. She is the very first Filipino Suzuki method specialist, having received her training at the American Suzuki Institute at the University of Wisconsin in Stevenspoint and under Dr. Haruko Kataoka of Matsumoto, Japan. She also frequently observed Dr. Kataoka teaching her students at Talent Research Institute in Matsumoto, Japan. In 1997, Prof. Arambulo received her certification and appointment from ISA (Intlernational Suzuki Association) as the first Suzuki Teacher Trainer in the Philippines.

Also in 1997, Prof. Arambulo completed her Master of Education degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of the Philippines , Diliman, Quezon City. She is also a certified Montessori teacher.

Prof. Arambulo is the founder and directress of the Greenhills Music Studio, (1968) and the Children’s Talent Education Center, (1984) the only Suzuki preschool in the country.

She was a faculty member of two universities, the University of the Philippines College of Music and the Saint Paul University College of Music and the Performing Arts until her retirement in 2007. She still actively teaches students at the Philippine High School for the Arts and at the Greenhills Music Studio.

Prof. Arambulo is the president of the Philippine Suzuki Association,Inc. founding member, secretary and chief piano teacher trainer of the Asia Suzuki Association for the entire Asian region. She has been guest faculty in Suzuki conferences in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Barcelona, Spain and in Turin, Italy. She is also a member of the Suzuki International Piano Committee representing Asia which convened in Turin, Italy, in Colchester, UK and in Ohio, Colorado and Massachusetts, USA. She was the overall chairman of the 3rd Asia Suzuki Conference which was held in Manila on May 3 to 7, 2007.

Prof. Arambulo has been the teacher of many local, national and international piano competition winners. Among them are Rowena Arrieta, Louie Ocampo, Ryan Cayabyab, Carolyn Kleiner-Cheng, Jonathan Coo, Allier Manahan and Oliver Salonga. Seventy-five students have graduated in music under her tutelage.

She has been the recipient of awards of achievement from the Piano Teachers’ Guild of the Philippines (PTGP) and most recently the highest award ever given by Saint Paul University College of Music on its 70th anniversary, for her nurturing and development of musical talent and her pioneering efforts in the Suzuki Music Method in the Philippines.

She is married to Atty. Augusto Cesar Arambulo and the mother of 5 children, two of whom are well-known musicians. She and her husband are active members of the Couples for Christ.
